SURREY, B.C. – A newly released investigation report reveals shocking details surrounding the death of B.C. serial killer Robert Pickton in prison, stating he was assaulted by another inmate who broke a broom handle and thrust it into his face.

According to the Board of Investigation report released Friday, Pickton was attacked on May 19, 2024, at Quebec’s Port-Cartier Institution while medication was being distributed in his unit.

The report indicates that prison guards quickly intervened and convinced the aggressor to stop the initial beating. However, just minutes later, the assailant “grabbed a broomstick, broke the handle, and thrust it into” Pickton’s face.

The board’s report further states that Pickton was taken to a hospital by ambulance and then airlifted to another facility in Quebec City the following day. He was admitted to intensive care due to his critical condition.

Pickton ultimately died on May 31, 2024. Investigators interviewed 35 staff members from the prison and another institution, uncovering that inmates had free access to cleaning tools, including mops and brooms, which were not kept in locked cabinets.

At the time of the incident, Pickton was 74 years old. He had been serving a life sentence since 2007 for six counts of second-degree murder. Proceedings against him for an additional 20 counts of first-degree murder were stayed in 2010.
