SURREY, BC – Over 200 flights at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) experienced delays between Saturday and Sunday, with the airport authority attributing the disruptions to ongoing staffing constraints at Nav Canada, the country’s air traffic control agency.

Nav Canada has been grappling with persistent issues for months, and a shortage of air traffic controllers at YVR in particular has been a regular cause of delays.

With over 425,000 passengers expected to transit through YVR in the lead-up to Canada Day, Monday is anticipated to be the busiest travel day of the four-day stretch. The airport authority projects that more than 88,000 passengers will pass through YVR on Monday alone.

Nav Canada stated that it is striving to increase flight capacity wherever possible, with the constant goal of minimizing the impact on passengers. While the airport authority directly attributed the delays to Nav Canada, Nav Canada countered that air traffic delays are rarely the fault of a single organization.

An airport authority spokesperson confirmed that 186 flights were delayed on Saturday, and by 11:20 a.m. PT on Sunday, 24 flights were reporting delays.
