SURREY, BC – Firefighters battled a challenging blaze at a Surrey business selling e-bikes and e-scooters on Saturday, with the presence of lithium-ion batteries making the inferno difficult to control.

Surrey Fire Service Asst. Chief Mike McNamara reported that crews were called to EV Revolution on 104th Avenue near 139 Street around 7 p.m. following reports of smoke. While there’s no indication that the batteries caused the fire, McNamara noted their presence created extreme conditions for firefighters.

“They got into the building and the smoke was extremely thick, so it was difficult to navigate in the building to find the seat of the fire,” he explained.

The situation intensified when batteries within the e-scooters and bikes began catching fire, generating significant heat and smoke. “Eventually they had to pull out and just make a defensive attack,” McNamara added.

Fires involving lithium-ion batteries are known to be more intense and harder to extinguish, which contributed to the blaze taking over six hours to get under control. No one was injured, though one firefighter received treatment for heat exhaustion. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Fire departments across Metro Vancouver have issued warnings about the increasing risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, a growing concern as e-bikes and scooters gain popularity.
