A new report from the Quebec government says that prayer rooms are contributing to a climate of radicalization and mistrust in the province’s junior colleges.

The report questions whether prayer rooms belong in public colleges, suggesting they make it more difficult for students to coexist peacefully.

It stems from an investigation into two English-language junior colleges in Montreal, launched last November after complaints that the Middle East conflict had created an unsafe environment on campus.

Higher Education Minister Pascale Déry says the report reveals multiple shortcomings and warns that the government may take further action.

The findings point to certain student groups as sources of tension and note that colleges currently lack the authority to intervene effectively.
