Months of community opposition to a proposed crematorium and funeral hall in a Surrey neighborhood came to a swift end Monday, as city council voted within seconds to halt the project. Council was faced with two options: continue the permit process for a development that included three memorial halls, two cremation units, and a large parking lot near Tynehead Regional Park—or close the file and work with the applicant to find a more suitable location. Mayor and council chose the latter, sending the proponent, Five Rivers Community Services Society, back to the drawing board.

Before the council meeting, Tynehead residents gathered in protest, calling for the project to be relocated to a more appropriate setting.

“They should find an industrial area,” said local resident Jean. “Industrial operations belong in industrial zones, not residential neighborhoods.”

The proposed site—located near 168 Street and 92A Avenue, adjacent to Tynehead Park and the Serpentine River—had sparked a months-long campaign from residents concerned about increased traffic and possible environmental and health impacts on the nearby green space and river. Five Rivers Community Services Society already operates a busy funeral home and crematorium in the Tilbury industrial area of Delta, near the Fraser River.
