Nigeria’s anti-financial crimes agency says a man has been sentenced to a total of 76 years in prison for attempting to blackmail a teenager from Surrey, B.C., by threatening to post his intimate images online.
The RCMP previously said the 14-year-old died by suicide in 2023 after falling victim to “financial sextortion.”
According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Olukeye Adedayo was charged with 18 offences, including possession and distribution of child pornography, attempted extortion by threats, and money laundering.
The EFCC said Adedayo created an Instagram account in the teen’s name to share the explicit images. RCMP said the victim had believed he was sending the images to a girl during a brief online exchange.
Although Adedayo pleaded not guilty, he was convicted on all charges last Thursday. Despite receiving multiple sentences, the EFCC noted they will run concurrently, meaning he will likely serve a maximum of seven years — the sentence for each of four counts of obtaining property under false pretences.
An RCMP Serious Crime Unit sergeant was among the prosecution’s witnesses.
