KELOWNA, BC – The Kelowna Central Okanagan RCMP is sounding the alarm for local businesses and retail sellers about a concerning trend: a noticeable increase in counterfeit U.S. currency, particularly in $20 and $50 denominations, circulating within the community.
Cpl. Allison Konsmo of the Media Relations Unit said “Counterfeit bills can result in direct financial losses for businesses and independent retail sellers, especially small businesses like convenience stores, gas stations, and restaurants. These smaller establishments may lack the tools or training to detect fake currency and might be more likely to quickly accept cash during busy hours without a thorough inspection.”
“While counterfeit notes can appear convincing, there are often subtle tell-tale signs. These include missing or incorrect watermarks, the absence of a security thread, off-color bills, identical serial numbers on multiple notes, blurry or misaligned printing, or an unusual texture,” RCMP said.
To combat this issue, the RCMP provides various recommendations for businesses which include ensuring employees are familiar with the look and feel of genuine currency and know how to check for security features, inspecting cash carefully. “Invest in counterfeit detection pens or UV light scanners to help identify fake notes, the Bank of Canada offers resources and guides on how to identify counterfeit currency, If you suspect a counterfeit bill, contact the RCMP immediately and do not return the bill to the customer—note their description and any relevant details about the transaction. Preserve the bill in a protective envelope or bag and avoid handling it further,” RCMP added.
Counterfeit currency affects everyone from small businesses to customers. Police are encouraging the public to share this post with fellow business owners and staff to help raise awareness and reduce the risk in our community.
