A Courtenay-Comox MLA is criticizing Interior Health for what he describes as a “systemic failure in healthcare delivery” at Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Brennan Day, who represents Courtenay-Comox and serves as the official opposition critic for rural health, is raising alarms over what he calls a growing crisis at the hospital.

“This is a disaster in the making, and no amount of PR from Interior Health can hide the truth,” said Day. “Nurses are being silenced, overburdened, and disregarded, while patients suffer in understaffed emergency rooms and maternity units. This government has allowed bureaucratic growth to thrive while essential front-line care deteriorates.”

Day cited anonymous and unverified reports from a media outlet claiming that staffing shortages at VJH are so severe that ER nurses are being asked to cover obstetrics without proper training. The same sources allege that orphan patients—admitted individuals without an assigned doctor—are left untreated.

To address these concerns, Day has launched a confidential rural health tip line, encouraging healthcare workers, patients, and families to share their experiences of systemic issues within B.C.’s healthcare system.  This tip line aims to protect whistleblowers, amplify frontline voices, and reveal the truth that management continues to deny.
