Statistics Canada says population growth came to a near standstill in the first quarter
The agency reports that from January 1 to April 1, Canada’s population grew by 20,107 people to reach 41,548,787. This marks the smallest increase since the third quarter of 2020, when the population declined by 1,232 people.
This was the sixth consecutive quarterly decline in population growth following the federal government’s decision to reduce both temporary and permanent immigration levels in 2024.
However, all of the population growth this quarter was still due to immigration, as Canada experienced 5,628 more deaths than births.
Canada admitted 104,256 immigrants in the first quarter of 2025, while net emigration totaled 17,410.
Meanwhile, the number of non-permanent residents decreased by 61,111.
