DHL Express Canada has announced it will suspend operations nationwide due to an ongoing strike and lockout involving 2,100 truck drivers and other employees. With negotiations at a standstill, the company plans to stop parcel deliveries starting June 20, the date when federal legislation banning the use of replacement workers comes into effect. Incoming shipments to Canada will stop as of Tuesday night.
Back on June 8, the German-owned logistics company revealed it had implemented a “contingency plan” to continue servicing its over 50,000 clients, including major brands like Lululemon and e-commerce platforms Shein and Temu. At the time, spokeswoman Pamela Duque Rai stated via email that DHL did not anticipate major service disruptions.
Unifor, the union representing DHL’s truck drivers, couriers, warehouse, and call centre staff, had previously warned the company against using temporary workers, with union president Lana Payne saying such actions would negatively impact contract negotiations.
The planned shutdown further intensifies labour unrest in the parcel delivery sector, as Canada Post is also embroiled in a dispute with 55,000 employees amid stalled talks and a union-imposed overtime ban last month.
