Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin told The Canadian Press that the government plans to reinstate a consumer rebate program to make electric vehicles more affordable. The previous federal rebate program, launched in 2019, proved so popular that it quickly exhausted its funding, prompting Ottawa to pause it earlier this year.

Dabrusin also confirmed that Canada’s electric vehicle mandate—which requires all new light-duty passenger vehicles sold to be zero-emissions by 2035—will remain unchanged. So far this year, about eight per cent of new vehicles sold in Canada have been zero-emissions.

Meanwhile, Conservatives spent Tuesday in Ottawa demanding the mandate be scrapped, raising concerns about potential risks to the auto industry posed by U.S. tariffs.
