Following extortion bids in Lower Mainland, Linda Annis, executive director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers, is urging anyone with information about the recent alleged extortion-related shootings targeting South Asian businesses in Surrey to anonymously contact Crime Stoppers.

“It’s important to note that Crime Stoppers is not the police,” Annis stated. “We appeal to anyone with information to call us anonymously if they fear for their safety and do not wish to be identified in any way. We are sensitive to the fact that some individuals who have immigrated here from other countries may have an inherent distrust of police or other authorities. I cannot stress enough that we are not the police, and it is completely safe for anyone to call Crime Stoppers.”

There has been an increase in violent extortion attempts across Canada in recent months. Following a special forum held in Surrey on Sunday by representatives from police and all levels of government, it is clear that police are increasing resources to investigate these crimes and would appreciate any additional information to locate and arrest those responsible.

“Any information is welcome. Even if the information seems minor, it could prove to be a missing piece of the puzzle that police need to solve the case,” Annis emphasized. “Police cannot be everywhere, and sometimes obtaining the right information is all it takes for police to make arrests.”

Annis further added, “Please be assured that Crime Stoppers will ensure your identity is never revealed by anyone. Your anonymity is guaranteed by the Supreme Court of Canada, and you will never be called to testify or appear in court. In our decades of operation, we have never identified any of our tipsters.”
