B.C. Leads Canada in Monthly Job Growth with 13,000 Jobs Added in May: Minister Gibson

Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation, Diana Gibson, claimed that according to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey, British Columbia led the country in monthly job growth for May by adding 13,000 jobs. She stated that since the beginning of the year, the province has created 67,000 full-time jobs—more than any other province.

Gibson said these figures show that B.C.’s economy remains strong despite global challenges.

“In May, private-sector employment has increased by 8,900 jobs compared to last month. Since July 2017, B.C. has gained 183,300 private-sector jobs. So far this year, we have the second-highest increase in private-sector employment among provinces at 14,700 jobs,” she said.

“B.C. leads in women’s employment, an increase of 11,000 this month. So far this year, B.C. has the highest increase in women’s full-time employment among provinces at 32,900. Youth employment also increased in May by 1,400 jobs.

According to the report, B.C.’s unemployment rate stands at 6.4%, which is lower than the national average of 7.0%. Additionally, with an average wage of $38.07 per hour, B.C. remains ahead of other provinces in earnings.

In the construction sector, employment rose by 23,800 compared to last year, while professional and technical services saw an increase of 11,100 jobs.

Gibson also mentioned that she will be heading to Europe next week on a trade mission aimed at promoting B.C.’s innovation sector and attracting new investments.
