The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has revealed that close to 600 foreign nationals with criminal records, who are slated for deportation, are currently missing. Alarmingly, 431 of these individuals have been found guilty of serious offenses, including sexual assault.
According to CBSA figures published by The Globe and Mail, 1,635 foreign nationals convicted of crimes in Canada are facing deportation. However, 599 of these individuals have failed to appear for deportation proceedings and have been placed on the agency’s “wanted” list.
A significant portion of these absconders have been evading authorities for extended periods. Of the 599 missing individuals, 315 have been avoiding deportation for more than three years. Additionally, another 46 have evaded authorities for over two years.
Among the foreign nationals due for deportation, 401 are currently serving prison sentences and are mandated to leave the country upon their release from custody.
The CBSA categorizes “serious criminals” as individuals convicted of offenses punishable by a prison term of at least 10 years.
Foreign nationals facing deportation, including unsuccessful asylum claimants, retain the right to appeal their cases in the courts. This appeal process can often extend for several years.
The CBSA has been shifting away from detaining high-risk offenders in provincial prisons due to objections from provinces, human rights organizations, and immigrant advocates. Plans by the government to detain these individuals in federal prisons were also shelved following widespread outcry from human rights groups.
