SURREY – Six charges have been approved against a Surrey man following an investigation by the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia’s (CFSEU-BC) Uniform Gang Enforcement Team (UGET) in connection with drugs seizure.

The charges stem from a case where a significant quantity of drugs and cash were seized.

According to officials, on August 24, 2024, UGET officers attempted to stop a vehicle in Maple Ridge that had previously evaded police. The driver, Nawfal Maher,31, fled on foot but was quickly arrested.

A subsequent search of his person and the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a substantial amount of illicit substances, including 1.157 kilograms of fentanyl, 790 grams of cocaine, and 337 grams of methamphetamine. Additionally, police located and seized $40,085 in cash.

On August 15, the BC Prosecution Services of Canada formally approved six charges against the 31-year-old. The charges include three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, and one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine. Maher also faces a charge of flight from police. He was arrested and has since been released under strict conditions, which include a nightly curfew.

Maher was arrested and later released on strict conditions, including a nightly curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

“This investigation highlights the proactive work of our Uniform Gang Enforcement Team, who are strategically deployed to disrupt gang activity before it escalates,” said Cpl. Sarbjit K. Sangha, Media Relations Officer of CFSEU-BC. “By taking harmful drugs and illicit cash off the street, UGET sends a clear message that drug traffickers will face enforcement and accountability”.
