BURNABY, BC – The City of Burnaby is set to initiate a competitive, open-market process for the future use and operation of its publicly-owned Harry Jerome Sports Centre.
Located on Barnet Highway, this city-owned facility originally opened in 1997 and has been leased to the same tenant for over 20 years. The building has now reached a point where significant investment is required to maintain it in good repair.
The officials state that as a responsible steward of this property, the City will soon issue an open call for proposals from potential operators. This move aims to test the market and ensure Burnaby residents receive the best possible value for this public asset.
“Any interested parties—including existing operators—will be able to submit a proposal. The facility currently serves primarily regional users. Through this open call, the City aims to address existing infrastructure needs and position the site to deliver lasting public value in alignment with Burnaby’s evolving needs,” officials said.
Following the call for proposals, staff will evaluate the submissions. They will then present a summary of responses, key findings, and recommended next steps to the City Council.
