The family of a 24-year-old Surrey resident, Navdeep Singh Sidhu, has identified him as the man missing after a vehicle plunged into the Squamish River early Saturday morning. Recovery efforts are currently stalled due to hazardous river conditions, according to Squamish RCMP.
Sidhu was camping with a group of six friends over the weekend when the single-vehicle collision occurred near Squamish Valley Road. His family stated that four of the men were searching for firewood along a gravel road, approximately 40 minutes from the highway, around 12:30 a.m. when their vehicle crashed into the fast-flowing river.
Squamish RCMP confirmed they responded to the single-vehicle collision into the Squamish River on June 14, at 2:30 a.m. involving four occupants. One individual, believed to be Sidhu, remains unaccounted for and is not thought to have made it out of the submerged vehicle.
Police in statement said that the Search and Rescue teams have conducted extensive aerial and ground searches along the water and shoreline. However, neither the vehicle nor the missing occupant have been located. Authorities emphasize that the river in this area is exceptionally deep and fast-flowing due to spring runoff, creating extremely hazardous conditions for recovery operations.
Squamish RCMP is actively coordinating with the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team. Police stated due to the current high water levels and the unknown location of the vehicle, recovery is not possible at this time.
Police further said they will continue to monitor conditions closely and reassess recovery efforts once water levels begin to recede and visibility improves.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing, with investigators working to determine the contributing factors surrounding the incident.
