A 20-year-old man has died following a single-vehicle collision in South Surrey late Sunday night. According to the Surrey Police Service (SPS), the accident occurred when a vehicle lost control and flipped into a water-filled ditch alongside the roadway.
Emergency crews responded to the scene at approximately 9:37 PM following reports of a crash on 168 Street, north of 40 Avenue. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the vehicle completely overturned and partially submerged in the water-filled ditch.
Firefighters from Surrey Fire Services worked tirelessly to extricate the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Once freed, paramedics from BCEHS and firefighters administered emergency life-saving measures on-site. The young man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition; however, police confirmed that he tragically succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The Surrey Police Service Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) has assumed conduct of the file and is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators are working to determine if high speed, poor weather conditions, or a mechanical failure contributed to the fatal incident.
