Authorities in Nepal said on Monday that at least 19 people have been killed amid unrest after police in the capital fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters. The demonstrators, angered by a social media shutdown and corruption, were attempting to storm parliament.

A local official stated that most of the young protesters broke through barricades to force their way into the parliament complex in Kathmandu, where they set fire to an ambulance and hurled objects at riot police guarding the legislature.

According to police, more than 100 people, including 28 police personnel, were receiving medical treatment for their injuries. Protesters were seen transporting the injured to the hospital on motorcycles.

The protests were fueled by a government decision last week to block access to several social media platforms, including Facebook. Approximately 90% of Nepal’s 30 million people use the internet.
