A 12-year-old boy in Alberta has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his 7-year-old brother.

Lethbridge police were called to a home in the city’s north end around 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 following reports of a child being stabbed.

Police say the boys’ father dialed 911 after returning home to find his younger son injured. The 12-year-old initially told his father that a stranger had broken into the house, attacked his brother, and then fled.

The younger boy was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, then airlifted to Edmonton Children’s Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

During a search of the home, investigators recovered a knife believed to have been used in the assault. Evidence led police to conclude the older brother stabbed his sibling multiple times and believed he had killed him, before fabricating the story about an intruder.

The 12-year-old is now facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault. He is currently in custody.

His identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
